The Perfect Escape
There are many arguments, which may serve to make the case, that the employment of rational thought processes is a far more effective means of achieving individual and societal goals than irrational blind obedience to external dictates.
One of the most compelling is that the "worldly goods", which, in the minds of many, comprise a large part of "The Perfect Escape", and for which, bloody wars are often waged, are all created by employing rational thought processes and scientific methodology. The basic foundations of these processes and this methodology is that there are no predetermined rules, no boundaries no limits. Hypotheses either function or they don't function in explaining the factual evidence.
For instance, if one is trying to create a better car there is no outside authority dictating that a car shall only have an odd number of wheels. The designer is free to choose from any number of wheels, The only criteria are does it work well? m0re importantly, does it look good? and, even more importantly, will it sell well?
These products, which only rational thought processes can create, are so admired and sought after that many people cheerfully inflict all sorts of unspeakable atrocities on their fellow human beings in order to acquire more of them. Why not then employ these same thought processes to achieving all our goals - both individual and societal?
Why is it also taken for granted that individual and societal goals are, by nature, in conflict with each other? Applying truly rational thought processes to this apparent conflict may reveal a different side to the coin. It is obvious that civilizations, based on unquestioning irrational obedience to belief systems of any kind, simply do not work very well. We have been trying it this way since the dawn of History - maybe it is time to try a different approach.
It is time, perhaps that we look to the real soothsayers and fortune tellers in our society to take the lead in solving societal problems. The job of persons, who are schooled in rational thinking, is to solve problems and to predict the future - with near certainty. Any good engineer is a fortune teller par excellence and will be only too glad to predict (with near certainty) that, if you put a certain load on a bridge, it will break.

Rambling rant space filler
To facilitate both these tasks it is essential that we have some understanding of what influences individuals of all stripes to deliberately repress there natural ability (of whatever level) to utilize rational thought processes. Clearly, as stated above, the powers that be feel it is in their best interst to encourage and in fact dictate this repression.
And why is it that the masses are so willing to go along with these dictates.? No doubt human beings, like all living creature, gravitate away from pain and towards pleasure. The vast majority of humanity must then believe (rightly or wrongly) that, blindly and unquestioningly, folowing the rules is the most pleasurable and least painful course of action.
It also seems natural to assume that ignoring the imposed rules and employing rational thought processes in making decisions would, not only, be frought with risk of painful consequences but would also require a lot of hard mental work. In fact, notwithstandng the unfortunate fate of many rulebreakers throughout history, the reverse is, more often than not, the case. The question is - How can 5 billion people be persuaded of this?
Unfortunately, this brings us to one more hurdle, to be overcome, in the task of persuading 5 billion people to adopt rational thought processes. The "inconvenient truth" is that, while employing rational thought processes, to achieve the goal of creating a functional television, is invariably the most effective choice. In regard to achieving our personal goals, this is not always the case. It all depends on the cultural climate one is living in.
Clearly, using rational thought processes to deduce that the the earth revolves around the sun - and announcing these findings to the public, can, in certain historical periods, have a very negative effect on achieving one's personal goals - particularly the goals of staying attached to one's head or avoiding being the main attraction at a public barbeque.
Throughout the history of human kind, most cultures have taken a very dim view on the employment of rational thought processes and have only grudgingly permitted their usage, by the scientific and industrial community - because of the yummy weapons and goodies these communities provide.
This means that the task of persuading the masses to utilize rational thought processes must proceed simultaneously with the task of persuading the "powers that be" to at least remove the sanctions placed on rational thought processes - if not actively encourage their use.
